It's Not You, It's Me!

I've just recently started a new blog that you can check out at soundwavesurfer.blogspot.com. It'll be more pertaining to my developing career as a composer and sound designer.

Unfortunately, I won't be posting to the Cross Pad as much as I used to (a couple months ago:P) because of my busy schedule. SAD FACE. I had a great time, but now I must move on to bigger things. Thanks to everyone that's read any of my posts and I hope you'll keep following me on my other blog. Big thanks to Josh Clark for helping with the blogging duties here too. Not sure what he's going to do now, so I'll let him post his message.

BIG FAT THANKS!

Grab a boogie board and head over to my new blog!

Get Involved...All the Cool Kids are Doing It!!!

Okay, so I am proud to announce that I am officially a member of the GGDA, the Georgia Game Developers Association. What is GGDA, you ask? Simple, it's a group of video game developers that collectively embrace and support the thriving gaming industry within the great state of Georgia. They pool their knowledge and experience together to educate and evolve their fellow members, especially the n00bs (that's me).

I think it's very important that if you wish to become a part of this great industry, you must surround yourself with people that have more experience, thus allowing you to learn. Since my involvement with the Athens chapter of the GGDA, I have grown into something that I thought was only a dream (I'd like to personally thank Jordan Lynn and Casey O'Donnell for that).

So here's the reason I'm posting this, if you're reading this and you're thinking "Gee, that sounds like fun, I wish I could make games" then stop just thinking about it and do it! With all the resources out there for indie game developers there's no reason why you can't be successful! So here's a few tips on how to get started:

First, join a group. Find people in your area that are already making games, this will help you out more than anything. Be sure to check out the IGDA (International Game Developers Association) and see if there are any chapters in your area. That's your best bet. Here's a link to the "Chapters" page of the IGDA website.

Second, a craftsman is nothing without his tools! There is a plethora of freeware and cheapware (yes, I made that up) out there for any type of designer (programming, art, sound). You just need to find the right one for you. Personally, I'm currently working with UDK (Unreal Development Kit), it's a free version of Unreal 3. It's an all in one as for designing goes but you'll need at least a modeling program to really step up your games. Maya and 3ds Max are industry standard and you can get trial versions for the websites. With modeling, I'm sure you'd like to add some texture to those creations, Photoshop is pretty much the best and can be reasonably priced if you find the right version. There are also TONS of freeware programs that do the same thing, I've just grown to love PS. As for sound, anything from Garage Band to Pro Tools and Ableton work perfectly.

So there you have it, I have given you everything I can think of right now. If you know of anything I don't, like better programs, please leave a comment and share with your gaming brethren! Thanks for reading and game on! Oh, and go get involved!!!

Break Out the Bunny Ears!

Hey, guys, I know it's been a while but I think this article will more than make up for it. Brace yourselves, I'm about to drop a bomb.

Playboy (yes, the magazine) is launching a video game label.

I'm going to pause for a second and let that sink in - pause - you good? Okay, so here's the scoop. The Hef announced that he is partnering with Bigpoint, an online gaming company. Through this partnership, Playboy will distribute select Bigpoint games on their website, starting with Poisonville, an MMO currently in open-beta. According to the game description, Poisonville will feature "beautiful, Playboy-caliber women." Now let's be honest, men love Playboy. Men love video games. But should we question whether or not putting them together is a good thing. I doubt it is. This is what I see happening, a slew of cheaply made games featuring scantily clad women with vitrually no storyline or quality gameplay. Now, of course there will be a portion of people that say "So what? It's got hot girls!" This is a problem. We can't let the gaming industry turn into a medium for non-gaming companies to turn a quick profit. Let's hold every title to a higher standard because for every cheap, unimaginative title that's bought, a real, beautiful title loses money. Think about that next time you're walking through Gamestop or Play N Trade. Oh, and because of my general distaste for this, I'm not supplying you with any links to the game or the companies, sorry.

What do you think? Should we welcome Playboy and any other company with open arms to start developing and distrbuting titles or should we leave that to the companies that were founded to do that very thing? Post a comment with your views. As always, thanks for reading and game on!

Monday Eargasm #21: Metric - "Black Sheep"

Turn that radio off! We know you grow tired of the cookie cutter top 40 hits that's bombarded at you 23 time a day. Let us soothe your ears to something new and maybe introduce you to something entirely different, no tip required. All in a day's work for The Monday Eargasm:)

I'm in lesbians with this song.

Well, I'm back from my blogging vacation and I bring a kick-ass song with me for you. Featured prominently in my new favorite movie Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, Metric's "Black Sheep" is filled with catchy indie flare and easily the best song on the soundtrack. Check out more them them at their website ilovemetric.com.

Most of you have probably already seen the viral video of the guy that is EXTREMELY happy to see a double rainbow at Yosemite Park. Although he claims he wasn't trippin' on acid or any drugs, maybe he has the right idea. We should take time to look at the beauty of nature. But enough of that sappy stuff, check out what The Gregory Brothers did when they take his voice and auto-tuned it into a kick ass song!

The Gregory Brother also auto-tune clips from news channels and make some creative songs using voices of politicians and President Obama. Check them out at TheGregoryBrothers.com.

Oh man, I'm so glad I heard this the other day! Listening to Violent Soho, from the land down undah of Australia, is like being transported back to the first half of the 90's when grunge rock was the shit. Violent Soho is like an interesting mix of Nirvana and Weezer- thick dirty guitars with enough catchiness to keep you coming back for more.

Check out their official website to listen to more!

I couldn't make it to this past week's annual Athens, GA music and arts festival ATHFEST. I was pretty devastated, but I had my own personal Athens music party coming from my speakers this weekend. One of the more popular bands to come out of Athens is Modern Skirts. Check out this week's eargasm "Soft Pedals" from their sophomore album All Of Us In Our Night.

I personally dig their first album Catalogue of Generous Men more, but I like they are experimenting more away from their usual pop sound. They've finished recording, mixing, and mastering their third album and should be released pretty soon. Pretty pumped! Check out their website at www.modernskirts.com.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs performing "Soft Shock" at Coachella 2009.

Karen O is one of my favorite female lead vocalist ever. So simple, yet so beautiful. Yeah Yeah Yeahs released their last album called It's Blitz! last year with this single "Soft Shock." It feels like the spiritual successor to "Maps." Listening to this makes me want to sit at a beach at sunset with a tasty beverage and my feet in the sand. What do you feel like when you hear this?

If you haven't heard their earlier stuff, get to it! Check out their website at yeahyeahyeahs.com.

World of Warcraft Anger Management Fail

This dude just found out his girlfriend deleted his WOW account and explodes on his computer. I don't feel too bad since he's using a PC. I'm also a little surprised he has a girlfriend too.

GO USA!!

The 2010 World Cup began this past weekend and Weezer released a brand new song to commemorate the games. Their new song "Represent" is much like their new sound they've been getting into for their past two albums, which is very rock/pop oriented. Best part? It's available for free on iTunes! The US Team recently tweeted how they listen to it in their pre-game playlist:

"Just downloaded the new Weezer song here in Rustenburg...Got it added to our pre-game playlist for tomorrow! Go #USMNT"

Get the free download and watch the World Cup!

Rock Band 3 Will Feature A New Keyboard, Full Functioning Guitar

It's about time!

To set up hype just a few days before E3 in L.A., Harmonix has just announced that Rock Band 3 will feature a 25-key keyboard and a full-sized, fully functional guitar by Fender. Check out the the USA Today's special first look at the game below.

Other additions of interest is the new "Pro" mode, which is supposed to be a more difficult game mode that will actually teach players how to play guitar, keyboard, and drums using different peripherals and realistic notation. Another cool feature is the ability to drop in and out of a song on the fly. Perfect for parties or get-togethers when you need to get a new beer. Don't worry, all your tracks and invests from past Rock Band titles will be able to be ported over as well!

Seriously, the coolest and biggest news is the addition of the keyboard. I cannot wait to try it out!

Ever listen to Math Rock?

We Versus The Shark was one of my favorite bands from the little music town of Athens, GA. They played their last show last Summer during Athfest Music and Arts Festival and rocked the Morton. I wish I could see them live again one more time!! Check their music out on their MySpace for some awesome head-banging goodness.

Monday Eargasm #14: Michael Giacchino - The Score to "Lost"

Turn that radio off! We know you grow tired of the cookie cutter top 40 hits that's bombarded at you 23 time a day. Let us soothe your ears to something new and maybe introduce you to something entirely different, no tip required. All in a day's work for The Monday Eargasm:)

And so it is over. After 6 beautiful years of amazing storytelling, LOST came to an emotional end last night for its series finale. Not many words can describe how I feel about the ending, other than it was beautiful, satisfying, and thought-provoking. Also, I can have a life now!!

One of the best parts of the show was the amazing score, composed by Academy Award winner Michael Giacchino. The music was a character of the show it self. Simply beautiful. There's no way I couldn't feature part of his score as a Monday Eargasm, so enjoy the live recording/rehearsal of Giacchino's music before the LOST Live event that took place last week.

Thank you Michael, for providing bombastic glissandos and heart string tugging ballads to the most amazing television show of all time.

LOST Cast Retrospective Video

Yeah, yeah. I didn't post this week's Monday Eargasm. It'll resume next week! I'm in the process of moving back to Atlanta to start my new internship, but more on that later.

Here's a retrospective video from the cast members of LOST. The series finale is Sunday, May 23rd, so I hope everyone is getting ready for their LOST viewing parties! Enjoy the video and have a box of tissues near by.

Bigger and Better Things to Come!

Hey guys, sorry about my recent absence in the blog. I've been working on several things for the blog and other outlets of creativity (that I might even share with you when I'm done). Which brings me to my point in this post: things to come!

Bryan and I have been talking about the blog and we want to try a few new things to help make our blog more accessible and more appealing to a broader audience. Among the little things, the biggest announcement is that The Cross Pad will now have a video series! That's right, yours truly will be giving you a video each week covering whatever game-related material I can cram into a video small enough to fit on Youtube. Oh yeah, that's another part of it, we will be starting the official The Cross Pad Youtube Channel!!! So when we do, be sure to subscribe so you can keep up to date on our oh-so-informative posts about anything digital media! As far as my first video post, you can expect it Thursday (yes, past due for yet another Indie Game Wednesday but I make up for it, promise).

All in all, I'm really excited to be doing this and I hope you all like it as much as we do! Thanks, as always, for reading and game on!

Monday Eargasm #13: Rebecca Roubion - "Free"

Turn that radio off! We know you grow tired of the cookie cutter top 40 hits that's bombarded at you 23 time a day. Let us soothe your ears to something new and maybe introduce you to something entirely different, no tip required. All in a day's work for The Monday Eargasm:)

I made a very cool new friend at the office a couple months ago and then when I found out she was a singer/songwriter, I was instantly a fan of hers. Rebecca Roubion has such a soothing tone and her piano playing skills equally exhibit the amount of talent she has. Check out her song "Free" and more from her album A Fine Place To Start at www.rebeccaroubion.com. Can't wait to see her live soon!

P.S. - Everyone in Nashville is a musician. Seriously.

My First Year In The Real World

Exactly one year ago today, I stood up, turned my tassel over and stepped into the real world. It's cliche, but damn - what a year it has been. Back on May 9th, 2009, after the initial highs of being done with my college education was over, I was terrified. I had no clue where my life would go. I had a degree in music education, but wanted to pursue my dreams of having a career in the music business. The problem was I didn't know those dreams were. I was just hoping I could put my foot in the door somewhere and work my way up the ladder, something everyone told me I would have to do.

After sending 42 resumes all across the country during the summer, my mentor Bruce Burch forwarded me a job opening in the music industry in Nashville. I sent another resume, had a phone interview and was hired all within a day. It was a big sigh of relief and excitement engulfed me. Moving to a new city and a new job was pretty amazing. It looked like my life was on that road of working up ladders, but life sometimes likes to throw some curve balls.

Pump the brakes!! Three months later, I got laid off. This completely shook my world and panic took over. I tried to look for other jobs, but kept hearing the same thing: "We're looking for someone with more experience."

UGH.

Periods of solitude and hopelessness suck, but they really do make you grow as a person and force you to make decisions. I had to skip this whole "climbing up the ladder" plan because that plan no longer exists today. I repeat: the plan of working up the ladder does not exist anymore. I went straight to what my passion was.

I've been creative all my life. Either making stop-motion movies with Lego pieces or sketching Star Wars characters on paper. Being creative will be the only thing that will make my life worth while. Coming to this conclusion, I decided that I will be a audio engineer and composer for film and interactive media. After I decided this, I put my plan in motion. I reached out to my mentors, got put in touch with people that could help me and been having a blast since.

Interning with Tommy Cooper has been completely inspiring as I've learned so much about audio engineering and life in general. I've also been supplying scores to a short film, an upcoming indie video game, and some hip hop vocals from co-workers. I've got so much in stored for the next year as well!

Anyway, I was just musing on the state of my life a year after graduation and it's tough but definitely a lot better and more focused. 5 years of college prepared me for the real world, but the real world is definitely where I've learned about what I want to do with my life.

Cheers to all new grads (oh, and moms!). In the mean time, I'll still be blogging about nerdy things.

The Nashville Flood - May 2nd, 2010

No new Monday Eargasm this week. Instead, I'd like to feature an astounding new video on YouTube made of many images from the flood that hit Middle Tennessee this past weekend. Between May 1st and May 2nd, Middle Tennessee was hit by a devastating storm that accumulated the greatest amount of rainfall ever recorded in Tennessee history.

Thankfully, the immediate area I live in was not hit, but you can find flood damage just a mile away. Rock walls were torn down. Cars were stranded on the side of the road. An ambulance was in a ditch flipped over. Some roads were just completely gone. This is the first time I've ever experienced a flood and it was pretty scary. My thoughts are going out to the victims of the storm and I hope things will get better in the coming days.

A good friend of mine with excellent taste in music introduced me to this band called Local Natives, specifically this video featuring their song "Wide Eyes" and I decided to pass it forward to you! I'm impressed with their musicality and how everyone in the band lends their vocals to the track. The lead singer also has a glorious mustache. Thumbs up! Check them out!

Wasted Guy Vs. Flip Flops - Hilarious Viral Video

This is seriously one of the funniest videos I've seen in a long time.

This hilarious event was taken during Coachella 2010 last weekend. Good to see the drunk guy finally won! I think we all cheered for him at the end! Maybe his backpack was just too heavy.

Indie Game Wednesday #2: Bubble Tanks 2

Alright, kids, it's the second Indie Game Wednesday and I'm featuring one of the most innovative shooters ever: Bubble Tanks 2. BT2 show us what it would be like if bubbles decided to fight other bubbles...in big bubbles...using bubbles as ammo. Intrigued yet? You better be.

HeroInteractive spared no expensive in the creativity department when improving their first successful game, Bubble Tanks. For those of you who haven't played BT2, you start out with a simple tank with a single firing gun. As you move through what I call "Bubble Stages" (basically huge bubbles) you encounter enemies. These enemies drop (yep, you guessed it) bubbles that you collect. When you finally collect enough bubbles, the fun begins. You get to choose from three different paths for your tank upgrade to take: Heavy, Balanced and Agility. With ever successive level you get to choose another upgrade, further diversifying your tank. By the time you reach your maximum level you'll have a tank all your own to destroy bubbly baddies with. But with all this awesomeness, I must warn you; this game's replayability is through the roof which makes it highly addicting. Please, if you have a good job and/or family I must stress to take this game in small doses, we don't need complaints coming in about your unemployment due to my incredible game suggesting skills (seriously, don't do it.).

There you have it, folks. Hope you find as much enjoyment out of this game as I do. Here are the links for the game on HeroInteractive's website as well as Kongregate.

Thanks for reading and in the spirit of the recent April 20th holiday: Go in peace, stay in love.

Monday Eargasm #11: Corinne Bailey Rae - "Closer"

Turn that radio off! We know you grow tired of the cookie cutter top 40 hits that's bombarded at you 23 time a day. Let us soothe your ears to something new and maybe introduce you to something entirely different, no tip required. All in a day's work for The Monday Eargasm:)

It's about time that I featured a female artist, so what better way to start off with Corrine Bailey Rae? "Closer," from her sophomore studio album The Sea released this past January, is what I miss about R&B soul today - smooth vocals, funky rhythms, and real instrument sounds. The English musician has been nominated and awarded with many honors including an Album of the Year Grammy and two MOBO Awards. Here's to here continuing success! Check out her website at www.corrinebalieyrae.net.

Are There Any Talented Vocal Artists Anymore?

We are obsessed with "reality." It has seeped into our TV's with reality shows and cable network channels devoted entirely to reality television. It overcame our video games with life-like graphics and advanced realistic artificial intelligence. It has even infected out moviegoing experience with 3D technology to make the films seem more real and part of our world.

Then why the hell do we not feel the same way about popular music?

Beginning in the late 90's, music artists began to use Auto-Tune to correct pitch in vocal and instrumental performances, primarily in recording studios. Trade secrets like these were nothing new. When you hear an artist sing on the radio, more than likely it was cut with multiple takes of okay performances and taking the best parts to paste into one great definitive track. All Auto-Tune did was save time and trouble by fixing pitches on the fly. Then Cher made her comeback with her 1998 hit single "Believe." Her altered vocals brought a new sound to popular music and everyone wanted to imitate.

Now everyone does.

Reinvented for modern times in the mid-2000's, T-Pain began using Auto-Tune to the extreme, making his vocals sound roboticized. The "T-Pain Effect" is now copied by most hip-hop artists like Kanye West, Drake, and Lil' Wayne. R&B artists like Usher who were popular because of their naturally talented vocals now feel like they have to "catch up" with the new crowd of performers. This has got to stop. What happened to vocal integrity?

Gone are the days where vocal musicians would come into the studio to lay down vocal tracks and nail them within the first couple run-thrus. Frank Sinatra didn't have to use Auto-Tune when recording, he was just a talented vocal artist who actually knew what he was doing. Today, most vocal artists presume that engineers will run their vocals through the box. This isn't always bad, because I'm not totally against the use of Auto-Tune, just the overuse of it. Of course there will be a few intonation problems while recording tracks that Auto-Tune can fix in a jiff - No one's perfect. Auto-Tune should only be used in moderation. What suffers the most from the overuse of Auto-Tune? Live performances.
My way of calculating if artists are really talented (or if their engineer is) is through their live performances. I can't count how many times I've listen to singers live and was disappointed in their vocal performance compared to their recording. That is a by product of Auto-Tune. Jay-Z headed up the "Anti Auto-Tune Movement" last year in hopes that it will bring back integrity to the vocal artist and to inspire new artists to not rely so much on Auto-Tune. Thankfully, several artists have jumped on board, so maybe there's hope for the future of music. I'm not completely for abolishing Auto-Tune, but allow the performer's natural talent to shine through without newfangled technology getting in the way.

To think that this all started with Cher. Shame on you Cher. ;)

NCAA 2011 Massacre

Okay, I love football and I love games so, naturally, I love football games. Now given my passion for college sports the only logical game for me is the Electronic Arts NCAA Football franchise. This franchise has defined the college football experience for a gamer and continues to amaze consumers with every successive year. However, a tragedy has occurred. On April 8, 2010, EA announced that the cover of the upcoming NCAA 2011 game will be home to none other than Tim Tebow. In the article EA released they labeled Tebow one of the greatest players of college football. Now, since he has finished his final year at the University of Florida, I can admit that he had a pretty good run the past four years, however, as a die hard University of Georgia fan (Florida's sworn rival, for those of you who don't know) I must detest this fowl outrage. It wasn't enough that I had to watch ESPN continually compare everyone to Tim Tebow, now I have to see his often tear-filled face every time I reach for my latest football game?! He hasn't even been drafted yet! This cannot stand. The first option is to boycott the 2011 title. This seems to be the consensus among Tebow haters out there but I doubt they will all follow through with their threats because, let's face it, it's the only college football game worth playing. So I purpose something a little more drastic and creative. Everyone needs to carry on like they would with the annual NCAA release. Buy your beloved title, then, just as you return home to start your new Dynasty or Campus Legend (I;m more of a Campus Legend guy, myself), pause. Now after this oh-so-brief pause, pull the artwork sleeve out from behind the protective layer of laminate and go kindergarden on it. That's right, reach for those colorful markers and give me your best mockery painting of the teary-eyed gator. Then, as you finish your masterpiece of defamation, snap a quick pic of the beauty and post it on your Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc. That way everyone can see your distaste for this awful decision from EA.

Well, there it is. I've said my piece on the matter and I hope to see several designs come release date (July 13). Send me those Van Goghs, Picassos and Monets via redforsaken@gmail.com and I might just make an album of them and feature it on here. Thanks for reading! Game on and...

GO DAWGS!!!

Indie Game Wednesday #1: The Bloon Series

Here's the first of a weekly series I am calling Indie Game Wednesday where I will feature an Indie game I have found that I believe is good enough for the world to see. This weeks game is actually a series. The Bloon series. Now if you haven't played this highly addictive set of games then you've probably been living under a rock (or somewhere without internet) because every Bloon game has been featured in every major online gaming site I've seen. The series started as a puzzle game where you, as a dart wielding monkey, must pop an intricate pattern of balloons with a limited number of darts. As simple as that sounds, the higher levels can get very difficult. Another fun quality to the Bloon puzzle game is user generated content. Ninja Kiwi, the creator, has released numerous "Player Packs" featuring levels created by everyday people.

Now I know this already sounds awesome, right? Well it gets better. The success of the puzzle game birthed an even more successful tower defense collection. Bloons Tower Defense mixed monkeys as towers and balloons as creeps in a way that captured every hardcore TD player. I, myself, raced with a friend of mine to see who could beat the first three games (let it be noted that I was the victor). With every successor in the series, Ninja Kiwi has continued to innovate the puzzle and tower defense genres which makes every game with the Bloon name a must play for the casual and hardcore gamers alike.

Now that I've enticed you, here's where you can play these games. If you wish to play all the Bloons games and keep up with the newest releases then the Ninja Kiwi site is best but if you long for a social environment for your gaming then I would suggest Kongregate.

Monday Eargasm #10: The Temper Trap - "Sweet Disposition"

Turn that radio off! We know you grow tired of the cookie cutter top 40 hits that's bombarded at you 23 time a day. Let us soothe your ears to something new and maybe introduce you to something entirely different, no tip required. All in a day's work for The Monday Eargasm:)

Get your ears ready for an amazing time!

Last week, I saw the amazing movie 500 Days of Summer and quickly fell into love with the clever and entertaining love story that wasn't a love story. Better yet, the music featured in it was equally as awesome. The Australian alternative rock band, The Temper Trap has in the past couple years gotten a large following around the world with help from the many placements that "Sweet Disposition" has been in. Ranging from movies like 500 Days of Summer to car commercials, it's definitely helped them get the recognition they deserve. Check out their website at www.thetempertrap.net.

Monday Eargasm #9: Faunts - "Feel.Love.Thinking.Of

Turn that radio off! We know you grow tired of the cookie cutter top 40 hits that's bombarded at you 23 time a day. Let us soothe your ears to something new and maybe introduce you to something entirely different, no tip required. All in a day's work for The Monday Eargasm:)

I featured Faunts in a post a couple months ago about music in video games, but I love this band so much that I had to give them a shout out as a Monday Eargasm. Faunts was a joy to discover because I really like their electronic, shoegaze, and alternative rock sound. From their newest album, Feel.Love.Thinking.Of, released last year, comes a music video of the same title. It features an interesting art style and a very catchy 80's-esque riff. Check out their official site at faunts.com.

If you still haven't listened to M4 Pt. II by Faunts, listen to it after this. It's eight and a half minutes of pure epicness that everyone should experience.

Lego Matrix: Trinity Help Video

There are no words to describe how cool this is...

...other than they need to make more! Combining two of my loves, Lego's and the Matrix, is a match made in heaven! LOST Finale: $900,000 For A 30 Sec Ad

On Sunday, May 23rd, the TV forecast looks a little cloudy with a chance of cash-money! TV By The Numbers is reporting that the series finale of LOST could rank up there with other popular TV show series finales like Friends and Seinfeld.

"The cost of a 30-second ad in the finale episode of Lost is coming in around a whopping $900,000, according to media buyers. [...] During last year's upfront, a 30-second spot for "Lost" was selling for an average of $213,563, according to Advertising Age's annual survey of ad costs in prime-time broadcast shows."

For a monumental finale of this caliber, I'm not surprised. In fact, I think that average may rise just a bit more. Jeez, just hearing about the upcoming finale makes me sad. What are we losties to do??

Monday Eargasm #8: Youngblood Brass Band - "Brooklyn"

Turn that radio off! We know you grow tired of the cookie cutter top 40 hits that's bombarded at you 23 time a day. Let us soothe your ears to something new and maybe introduce you to something entirely different, no tip required. All in a day's work for The Monday Eargasm:)

Not many good things come out of Wisconsin (cheese maybe?), but this Oregon, Wisconsin brass band definitely delivers a awesome unique sound that further evolves what brass bands are. Youngblood Brass Band is bit of New Orleans brass band, a little bit of Jazz, a healthy dose of hip hop, a flavor of funk/punk, and a whole lot of amazing. "Brooklyn" is my personal favorite from their album Center:Level: Roar and exhibits their unique style. Give it a listen and check out their website for more at YoungbloodBrassBand.com.

3D & Motion Gaming: Evolution or Gimmick?

Just last week, Sony announced the new motion controller called Playstation Move, being nick-named "Wii HD" by fans. This week, Nintendo announced that the 3D handheld system called Nintendo 3DS will feature 3D gaming without the use of special glasses to experience it. Later this year, all new 3D HD televisions will be released for consumers to gobble up. What's going on here? Are we witnessing an entertainment evolution or a shallow, short-lived gimmick? In my opinion - a little bit of both.

When the Nintendo Wii was released in 2006 and the months (and years) afterward, critics voiced their opinion about it's gimmicky motion controls and that its initial popularity will wane off. Fast forward to 2010 - The Wii is still selling out at retails everywhere and breaking records just this past holiday season. Nintendo has proved that there's a market for motion controlled gaming and a whole new market of video gamers to indoctrinate.

What Avatar did for 3D is the same thing that the Wii did for motion control - it legitimized the medium. Instead of using cheesy 3D effects like a pole sticking out of the screen, it focused on immersing the audience in the film. America agreed that it did this with flying colors. The success of 3D in Avatar is now spawning 3D everywhere from video games, theaters, and television screens.

What is the common thread between the motion control and 3D technology? Immersion. We are getting to a point where the technology is there to help us experience film, television, and video games in a whole new way. Instead of pressing a button to swing a bat, now we can actually swing our arm. Instead of watching a flat 2d screen, we can now experience more sense of perception and depth, which is closer to real life. That's the goal - to match our sense of reality with how we interact with new media.

There are many criticisms of these new development. One is that many people are still not impressed and developers are going to waste most of their time utilizing this new technology with mediocre results. My answer: well... yeah, but only at first. New technology is just that - new. Just like when a new video game system is release, first generation games will not utilize the system's full potential. Give them a few years to learn the ins and outs and then you get amazing games later on. 3D and motion control may not completely WOW us yet, but it's only a matter of time.

Another criticism is that this new technology is not geared toward hardcore gamers and we will be the ones to suffer from it. I say no way! Motion and 3D won't hurt hardcore gamers at all, because there will alway still be developers who will make games for the core gamers. For example, digital music is today's standard but vinyl records are still produced with many who think it sounds better. This evolution won't bring the end to the Grand Theft Auto's, Call of Duty's, or Legend of Zelda's. Trust me, those will still be there. Now we'll just have to share the gaming space with our mom's and their Wii Fit's. If anything, this will help the alienation of core gamers and non-core gamers.

Face it - we're in a middle of an evolution. With new technology, we have to evolve and become better. What we're seeing with 3D and motion control is just the beginning. There will be many hills and bumps in the road, but for every muddy street, there will be a beautiful sunset of a game. And when we reach that destination where we can jack ourselves completely into new worlds Matrix-style, we'll forget criticisms even existed. But for now, I'll just enjoy the ride.

Top 5 Green Characters in Geek Culture

Happy St. Paddy's Day! To celebrate while you watch The Boondock Saints and drink your green beer, we here at the Cross Pad honor our top 5 green characters in geek culture. No, not those tree-hugging hippies. We're talking green machines that fill our pop culture hearts. Cheers!

5) Oscar the Grouch (Sesame Street)

How can we not honor our favorite ungrateful, yet educational, trash can living hobo? What's actually in that tin can, anyway? Btdubs, did you know that Oscar was originally orange in the first season on Sesame Street?

4) The Green Man (It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia)

Oh, it's the lovable, randomly placed Green Man from It's Always Sunny. Thanks to the show, we've caught this mysterious character at baseball stadiums, bars, and your local frat parties. Thankfully, I'm pretty sure it wont be the last either.

3) Leo, Don, Ralph, & Mike (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)

These guys count as one entity in my book. They took over lives (including my own) during the 80s-90s appearing in movies (awesome at the time), TV shows, lunchboxes, toys, comforters, and... rock & roll concerts? Yes, our favorite mutant kick-ass turtles tried tapping into their musical side for the Coming Out Of The Shells Tour (not so awesome at the time). Kudos to anyone that has seen this hilarious special:)

2) The Hulk (Marvel Comics)

HULK NO LIKE FULL SENTENCE. Yet, he's a genius doctor. This guy has away represented the anger that grows inside us, except he gets to live it out. Lucky. Seems like Hulk also enjoys a drink or 20 and tweet about it. What better way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day than to drink and read Hulk get smashed on Twitter? Follow him @DRUNKHULK.

1) Yoda (Star Wars)

I mean, c'mon. Who did you expect? The ultimate little green bad ass is the king of geek culture. He's spanned 5 movies, countless video games and expanded universe stories, and won't be giving up his throne anytime soon. Who knew that crazy old hermit on Dagobah was once a twisting, hyper-active Jedi Knight? His battle with Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith stole the show. ...Ah, what the hell. Follow him @Yoda.

Have a fun and safe night!

Michael Giacchino's Inspiring Oscar Acceptance Speech

Even though the Academy Awards were given this past Sunday, Michael Giacchino's acceptance speech has stayed in my head. The amazing musical composer won the Oscar for best original score for Up and instead of going through the motions of thanking everyone, he decided to inspire this creative generation.
"...I was nine and I asked my dad, 'Can I have your movie camera? That old, wind-up 8 millimeter camera that was in your drawer?' And he goes, 'Sure, take it.' And I took it and I started making movies with it and I started being as creative as I could, and never once in my life did my parents ever say, 'What you're doing is a waste of time.' Never. And I grew up, I had teachers, I had colleagues, I had people that I worked with all through my life who always told me what you're doing is not a waste of time. So that was normal to me that it was OK to do that. I know there are kids out there that don't have that support system so if you're out there and your listening, listen to me: If you want to be creative, get our there and do it. It's not a waste of time. Do it. OK? Thank you. Thank you."

Personally, I couldn't think of a better time to hear such inspiring and motivating advice. Thank you, Mr. Giacchino. We are listening and we will do it.

Now go finish scoring LOST as I'm sure your music is going to make me cry like a baby during the series finale. :)

Monday Eargasm #5: OK Go - "This Too Shall Pass"

Turn that radio off! We know you grow tired of the cookie cutter top 40 hits that's bombarded at you 23 time a day. Let us soothe your ears to something new and maybe introduce you to something entirely different, no tip required. All in a day's work for The Monday Eargasm:)

OK Go is a viral video making machine!! Their new video for "This Too Shall Pass" from their third studio album Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky has been gaining a ridiculous number of views which could compete with their last viral hits. It is the familiar "chain reaction" video which gets down right ridiculous towards the end. Fun and catchy tune with awe-inspiring visuals, great job OK Go!

Crazy Week For The Video Game Industry

DRAMA.

This was one intense week in the video games industry, which affected game developers and gamers like you and I. Former CTO Jason West and president Vince Zampella of Infinity Ward, the makers of the cash cow that is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, were fired by their employers at Activision for "insubordination." Activision, one of the most successful video game publishers in the world, is currently searching for documentation linking West and Zampella to Electronic Arts with the possible creation of a studio outside of Activision. West and Zampella shortly after filed a lawsuit against Activision for unpaid royalties from the success of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and for the rights of control to the Modern Warfare 2 brand. As of now, there is nothing new to report while the two parties flex their muscles, but it would seem like both companies would want to settle this very quickly as they sit on such an important game brand.

Also this week - PS3 APOCALYPSE!!

Okay, the picture is misleading. Shoot me. Wait, don't. Just hit me real hard. Anyway, this past Sunday night, "fat PS3" owners were greeted with a trophy error screen which made them unable to play certain games even if they were offline. According to Sony, "the internal clock functionality in the PS3 units other than the slim model, recognized the year 2010 as a leap year." Sony said the problem would be fixed within 24 hours and that PS3 owners should avoid turning their systems on until the issue was resolved. Fulfilling their word, Sony fixed the glitch and said "having the internal clock date change from February 29 to March 1, we have verified that symptoms are now resolved and that users are able to use their PS3 normally."

I can only imagine the stress and yelling going on at Sony while they were fixing this issue. Even though the glitch is fixed, it raises a new issue of our hardware connectivity to other networks. Online servers going down should be expected, but what really scares me is when that problem effects my single-player experience even if I'm not online. This will definitely affect the thought of all digital formats. Should we really put all our trust in a system that has the potential to fail even when we're not connected? Is there more value in analog devices like CDs or even **gasp** cartridges?

The West is Cool Again: My Thoughts on Red Dead Redemption

Okay, so I've never been a huge western fan but after doing a little research on this game I decided that it was a must-own. Red Dead Redemption is Rockstar's (best known for the Grand Theft Auto series) take on the wild west in it's waning years, just before World War I. Choosing the time period was crucial, with it being the final years of the western frontier Rockstar can use a more diverse weapon array. But a simple selection of weapons isn't the selling point for this game, I've found several really awesome reasons you should own this game...

First, since we're talking about weapons, I might as well mention this to start. Rockstar has implemented their new Rage system in conjunction with Natural Motions' Euphoria system to create one of the most realistic gun fighting mechanics I've ever seen. Basically, the person getting shot (hopefully not you) reacts completely to the power of the shot and where he/she (again, hopefully not you) is shot. This makes for a very realistic experience when plowing down outlaws, peasants, lawmen or anyone/thing you'd like. This amazing combination of engines doesn't just make fighting more realistic. Oh no, my friend, this "reaction based" system makes for a truly unique experience in-game no matter what you're doing. Say you're on top of a building and you decide to fall off the front of it, hitting the porch cover and then the dusty road before you. That fall will most likely not look the same twice because the engine reacts in a natural flow we're all used to here in the real world. Now this will no doubt become a standard in gaming physics but for now, we must satisfy our cravings for realism with RDR.

Next on the list of reasons why RDR pwns is the look of the game. With the rate that games are coming out, everyone has to be one their toes as far as graphics goes and Rockstar has not forgotten this. RDR looks amazing, just go watch the debut trailer and look at the horses. You can see every muscle on the horses in action when you see them running along in the desert. To some of you, this may be something to overlook but for the select few that look deeply into games for unique elements, this is one of them. These graphics, along side the bold and simplistic red theme, make this game a true eye-catcher. Trust me, all you who have those big fancy HDTV's will love the scenery this game has to offer.

And now the defining element in any game (in my opinion, anyway), gameplay. RDR a gun firing mechanic called Dead Eye that might not be the most original, but definitely appropriate. Dead Eye is split into three levels (each level being accessible as more experience is gained). First, Dead Eye simply slows combat, making it easier for you to line up a shot. On the second level, "X's" appear on enemies at crucial points, allowing you to target vital areas, maximizing your effectiveness. At the third level you actually get to plant those pretty little "X's" all over whomever you choose. Multiple targets are possible. Using the third level can really make you feel like Doc Holiday when you mow down four gunslingers with four shots to the heart in less than a second. This ability is tied to a very fluid battle system that most reviewers have related to GTA IV (same as IV or better) which makes RDR a potential outseller of the latest GTA installment.

So basically, this game has everything. Shoot outs, exploration, guns, beauty, comedy (as Rockstar can only create), shoot outs, guns and more shoot outs. Any gamer looking for a fun GTA-like, open world game HAS to own this. I know May 18 (official release date) is a long time from now, but I feel very confident in Rockstar's ability to bring on the gaming magic with Red Dead Redemption. Even Adam Sessler wants to buy it.

Thanks for reading. Game on!

Monday Eargasm #4: James Morrison - The Pieces Don't Fit Anymore

This week, I'm featuring the soulful sounds of James Morrison, the award winning English singer-songwriter from Rugby, Warwickshire. His song, "The Pieces Don't Fit Anymore," has to be one of the most beautiful break-up songs I've ever heard. Give it a listen and if you dig it too, check out his MySpace for more tracks.

You're welcome. :)

Could Pole Dancing Be An Olympic Sport?

I have to admit, watching pole dancing is pretty entertaining and very skillful, but does it really deserve to be an official Olympic sport? The International Pole Dancing Fitness Association believes so. In fact, their collecting signatures for a petition to the organizers of the London Olympics in 2012. According to NY Daily News, the IPDFA is pushing to have Pole Dancing be accepted as an Olympic sport if not by 2012, then 2016.

After doing some more research on this, I found out that there are serious pole dancing competitions that are held around the world, including women and men. I can probably accept the fact that pole dancing is becoming a little bit more "main stream" (just barely), and that it takes a lot of skill to perform, but no - this should not be taken seriously. Really. This act will forever be relating to stripping and the activity is overtly sensual, unlike any other sport in the Olympics. It's like if the porn industry pushed to have their films nominated for Academy Awards - ain't gonna happen. Plus, if baseball and softball have been taken out of the Olympics, how can anyone justify pole dancing being considered?

I've been proven wrong before, but this time... I guess we shall see.

Don't Swat Me, Bro! Being A Fly On The Wall In A Recording Studio

For the past month, I've had the awesome opportunity to intern with record producer/engineer Tommy Cooper in Nashville. I'm having a blast learning as much as I can about engineering side of music from one of the best! To add to the awesomeness, for the past two days I was able to essentially be that fly on the wall and help in any way possible during a tracking session in an actual recording studio on Music Row!

We had the tracking session for an artist named Anthony Hopp at OMNIsound Studios. Nicest guy ever and he had some really catchy pop tunes!

Here is the drum set right before the first session started.

It's weird and awesome that I know what most of those knobs and buttons do now. :)

I was able to meet and observe many amazing studio musicians that have played for popular artists including Reba McEntire and Taylor Swift. They hadn't listened to the music before hand, but all it took was one or two play-throughs of the demo and they were ready to record!

I was able to see magic made for the past two days and I loved it!

The best part is I get to do it again next week! More on that later!

American Humane Rains On District 9's Parade

Most of us already know that not one, but TWO science-fiction films have been Oscar-nominated for Best Picture this year and how awesome that a science-fiction film may finally win the coveted title. District 9 shocked many of us when it first came out with its creative storytelling technique and likable characters, but it looks like the American Humane Association is trying to destroy the movie's chances of Oscar history because they did not approve the line "no animals were harmed" at the end credits.

Last week, Karen Rosa, vice president of American Humane’s Film & TV Unit issued a statement that they "did not monitor ‘District 9.’ And the unauthorized use of that end credit on ‘District 9’ not only leaves open the questions of ‘How were the animals treated?’ and ‘Were any of them harmed or killed?’, but it’s dishonest to the public and it’s a slap in the face to the conscientious productions that have American Humane on set, meet our standards for animal safety, and have legitimately earned the right to say ‘No Animals Were Harmed.’ We encourage Academy members to cast their votes for films other than ‘District 9,’ to send the message that Hollywood cares about the safety of animals and respects intellectual property."

I understand that the use of "no animals were harmed" shouldn't have been used, but to threaten the integrity of the voting process for the Academy Awards is downright disgusting. Members of the Academy should vote on the basis of the collaborative efforts from production, directing, acting, writing efforts, and overall artistic expression. American Humane is absolutely wrong for encouraging Academy members to cast votes for other nominations. It's against the artistic integrity of why it was nominated in the first place.

Granted, I feel that there should be more investigation on this topic especially the interaction with animals during filming, but c'mon - get over it, American Humane. Please don't become PETA.

Speaking of which, PETA is going to go apeshit once they hear about this. :::sigh:::

This week, I'm featuring Ra Ra Riot's "Ghosts Under Rocks" with its driving tempo, interesting lyrics, and catchy melody. From their sophomore album The Rhumb Line, which peaked at #109 on the Billboard 200 in 2008. I dig it, especially since I'm a sucker for any strings in rock music.

Kid Gets Detention For Being Awesome

If my kid came home with this detention slip, I would give him a high-5 and take him to Chuck E. Cheese's. That'll do, pig. That'll do.

We can only hope that our kids will be this awesome.

Late post, but late than never as I always say. This week's eargasm comes from Mutemath's sophomore album Armistice. I discovered them through Pandora but many of you may have heard of them from being on the Twilight soundtrack... and that is the last time I will ever mention that film on this blog ever again. :P

Anyway, very catchy track and the video is pretty fun to watch, as with all their music videos. Enjoy!

It's Winter Olympics Time!

I kind of hate snow. It's pretty annoying. Especially since I'm done with schooling, it's even more pointless. But all snow flakes aside, I love watching the Olympics! Something about the whole world putting their cultural/political differences aside to come together and compete in sports just gets me going. With the help of new media, populations across the world can share the same experience as they watch their countries athletes on TV, the internet, and their phones at any time of the day. This is great because the olympic dream can reach even more people and influence the younger aspiring generation. The Olympics rock! I guess it's a minor dream of mine to be able to win one of those nifty medals.

But definitely during the Summer Games. Boo snow.

To watch all the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic events, tune into NBC on your television tube or that thing called the world wide web at NBC.com.

Read this.

http://www.gamecareerguide.com/features/824/maxims_of_game_.php

This will teach you more about game design than I can (PS-I teach game design). The only one I disagree with is the one that says you won't play many games- if you stop playing games, you'll stop growing as a creative artist. Don't stagnate. Filmmakers watch movies. Painters go to art galleries. Play. Learn. Grow. Make your own kick-ass games.

Also, stop designing huge games. You'll never have the budget to make the next Elder Scrolls game. Think small, build small, and your likelihood of success increases dramatically. Think "Episodic Content" if you have a great story you want to tell. Tell it over 6 smaller games. Think of them like chapters in your novel.

Monday Eargasm #1: Contra NES Throwback!

Turn that radio off! We know you grow tired of the cookie cutter top 40 hits that's bombarded at you 23 time a day. Let us soothe your ears to something new and maybe introduce you to something entirely different, no tip required. All in a day's work for The Monday Eargasm:)

For the first weekly edition of The Monday Eargasm, I decided to do a service to two types of people in this world: those who have played Contra for the original NES, and those that haven't. If you haven't, what a sad world you live in. But no worries! Behold the awesomeness that is the soundtrack to Contra in glorious full metal form. And for those that have, get ready to have your faces melt off - this is definitely the way these songs were supposed to be heard, in all its epic 80s metal-themed glory. Kudos to the band Vomitron for bringing these songs alive!

So let this music play while you're at the office today. I bet you'll be thrashing you head and using pens and pencils as drumsticks in no time!
