Coldplay Denies Plagiarism!

As the Coldplay Vs. Satriani plagiarism debate rages on, the heat is also starting to rise between the musical artists. Grammy nominated Coldplay is starting to fight back the allegations with a public announcement on their website made yesterday:

"With the greatest possible respect to Joe Satriani, we have now unfortunately found it necessary to respond publicly to his allegations. If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental and just as surprising to us as it him. Joe Satriani is a great musician but he did not write or have any influence on the song Viva La Vida. We repectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with all future endeavors. Coldplay."

Even with the creepy similarities, I'm going to have to side with Coldplay on this. I don't think there's enough to make a case out of this. It's cool to listen to a mash-up of the song, like many youtube videos have shown us. What if this is all a set-up to have Joe Satriani and Coldplay play together at the Grammys?!?!

Greatest punk'd ever.

Coldplay Sued for Plagiarism

Uh-oh.

Seems like Coldplay's Grammy nominated smash hit "Viva La Vida" my not be even theirs to begin with... Veteran rock guitarist Joe Satriani has sued the widely popular British band Coldplay this past Thursday, specifically for plagiarizing one of his songs. Satriani has said that "Viva La Vida" (2008) incorporated "substantial original portions" from his 2004 instrumental song "If I Could Fly."

MSNBC reported that Satriani is seeking a full jury trial, recovery of damages and "any and all profits" from the success of "Viva La Vida."

Before you make an opinion, listen for yourself:

Here's Coldplay's "Viva La Vida"

Now listen to Satriani's "If I Could Fly"

Hmmm, definitely sounds fishy. Is it plagiarism, though? I think that's the tougher question. Having the same chord progression isn't enough to win and although the chorus is similar, it's not an exact copy. Another weird coincidence, I think.

What do you think?
